The Spathoglottis species has been established in the year 1825 by the German-Dutch botanist Karl Ludwig Blume. Spathoglottis orchids are widely spread over Asia and can be found in India, Burma (Myanmar),Thailand, Laos, South China, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines and also Australia. It is also an invasive genus in Hawaii to the east, as just in modern times has it been establishing a stronghold. They have ovoid, depressed psuedobulbs that carry a few folded, plicate, narrow leaves. They have a tall, thin inflorescence that arises from the basal leaf axil and have many successesive flowers that open over many months. the sepals and petals are almost equal and are wide spreading. The sessile to shortly clawed lip is strongly 3 lobed, narrow and oblong with curved upwards sidelobes, a midlobe with a very narrow claw at the base of 2 small ovoid calli and 2 laterally spreading teeth and the apex that is more or less widening and sometimes cleft. The slender, curved, winged column does not have a foot and the eight pollina are in 2 slender groups of four.
